Today is the 52nd birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

On this day in 1964, Russel, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born in the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at the capital's Dhanmondi.

On the fateful night of August 15 in 1975, Russel along with most of the family members of Bangabandhu was assassinated.

The ruling Awami League (AL), its associate bodies and socio-cultural organisations have chalked up elaborate programmes marking his birthday.
