Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) yesterday expressed grave concern over the government initiative to establish a coal-based power plant close to Tengragiri reserve forest in Taltali upazila of Barguna.

Terming the power plant a threat to the forest's existence, the anti-corruption watchdog demanded immediate cancelation of the initiative to protect the ecosystem and biodiversity of Tengragiri and the livelihood of local people.

Issuing a press release following a news report, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said a local and two international companies in April signed an agreement to build a 307-megawat coal-based power plant “less than one kilometre” away from Tengragiri.

No clearance certificate was obtained from the Department of Environment during the process, which is illegal, he added.
