Workers of a garment factory blocked Dhaka-Munshiganj highway in Char Muktarpur area of Munshiganj yesterday, demanding due wages.

About 2,000 workers of Barnali Fabrics said they found the factory closed in the morning although their wages of three months remain outstanding. The road was blocked for three hours, creating traffic chaos.

Munshiganj-2 lawmaker Prof Shagufta Yasmin Emily was stranded in the jam on way to Munshiganj from Dhaka. The workers withdrew the blockade when the lawmaker, district administration and police intervened in the incident.

No factory official was available for comments.

Sub-inspector Joynal Abedin, in-charge of Muktarpur river police outpost, said the factory authorities shut it dow due to loss. Deputy Commissioner Shayla Farzana of Munshiganj said they are talking to the company authorities to resolve the crisis.
