Protests against BCL attacks continue

Pragatisheel Chhatra Jote, an alliance of left-leaning student organisations, yesterday brought out a procession on Dhaka University (DU) campus, protesting the recent Bangladesh Chhatra League attacks on their activists across the country.
The procession started from Madhur Canteen and ended in front of Ducsu building where a rally took place.
At the rally, Bangladesh Chhatra Union General Secretary Liton Nandi said, “Chhatra League activists are carrying out repetitive attacks on our activists and general students to establish their supremacy in different educational institutes.”
“Students will prevent their reckless activities and our demonstrations cannot be suppressed through attacks or filing of cases,” he added.
On January 23, several hundred activists of pro-Awami League student body BCL attacked a group of students, and leaders and activists of left-leaning student organisations to "rescue" DU Vice Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman, who was kept confined in front of his office by the protestors. At least 50 male and female students and two journalists were injured in the attack.
The students were demonstrating to press home their four-point demand, including punishment of the BCL men who harassed some female students a few days ago.
Earlier on January 15, BCL men foiled another demonstration on the campus, harassed female students and beat up the protest coordinator, before handing him over to the authorities. The sit-in was staged demanding cancellation of the affiliation of seven colleges with the DU.
