Private university student 'sexually harassed' in bus

Fellows demonstrate in capital

A private university student was allegedly sexually harassed in a running bus on her way to campus in the capital's Uttara on Saturday afternoon.

Protesting the incident, some hundred students of Uttara University yesterday morning staged demonstration before BNS centre in Uttara demanding immediate arrest of the bus stafferes of “Turag Paribahan”. The protesters also intercepted some 40 buses of the transport service till filing of this report at 8:50pm.

One of the students, Parvez Hossain, told The Daily Star that the bus had some seven passengers when the woman boarded the bus on Badda Link road  around 12:30pm and mysteriously, the bus staff then stopped taking more passengers.

When the other passengers got down at different points, the victim got scared and tried to get off but the staff obstructed her and shut the door, he said. At one point, one of them grabbed her, he added.

The student then kicked one of the staff and managed to jump off the running bus near Basundhara residential area, he said, adding that the victim suffered injury in a leg.

Another demonstrator, preferring anonymity, said they took to the street as one after another incidents of harassment are occurring inside the city busses.

A whopping 94 percent of women have complained of harassment in public transports at a time when more and more women are stepping out of social and family boundaries to get education and join the job market, according to a survey report released by Brac in March.

Nabid Kamal Shaibal, deputy commissioner of Uttara Division, said, “Both Uttara and Gulshan police are trying to identify the bus and its staff.”
