Murder accused killed in 'gunfight'
A handcuffed accused was killed in a so-called gunfight between law enforcers and criminals in Mymensingh city early yesterday.
Sarfan Islam Babu, 28, the prime accused in a case filed for the murder of electrician Peu Babu, was arrested in Dhaka on Sunday, said detectives.
In the early hours of yesterday, he was taken to Mymensingh city's Teenkona Pukurpar area to arrest other accused in the murder case, said Ashikur Rahman, an officer-in-charge of detective branch of police.
Sensing presence of police, accomplices of Sarfan opened fire on the law enforcers around 2:30am, triggering a “gunfight”, claimed Ashikur Rahman, who led the police team.
Sarfan, who was in handcuffs, was shot in the chest and back when he tried to flee, said the OC.
Sarfan was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, he added.
Anisur Rahman, a constable of the detective branch, was injured as the criminals also hurled projectiles at police. He was treated at Mymensingh Police Lines Hospital, said the OC.
OC (Investigation) Khandaker Shaker Ahmed of Kotwali Police Station said Sarfan was also an accused in five cases, including three murder ones, filed with the police station.
