A Rangpur court yesterday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping his domestic help in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur in 2007.

It also ordered that the name of the convict, Asadul Islam, 40, of village Bandarpara, be added to the birth certificate of the 11-year-old child conceived by the rape of 16-year-old girl. The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 also directed the state to bear all the expenses of the boy until he turns 18.

It also fined Asadul Tk 2 lakh, in default of which he would have to serve one more year in jail.

Asadul raped the girl on June 3, 2007 at his house and later convinced the girl to continue the offence by luring her with fake marriage promises.
