Jessore BCL leader hacked to death

Locals, fellows demonstrate seeking arrest of perpetrators

A local Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader died yesterday, two days after he was hacked in Jessore.

Rakib Hasan, 28, from the town's Nilganj Saharpara, was the joint secretary of the Jessore Government City College unit, said its President Iqbal Khandaker.

On Friday afternoon, Rakib was standing on Nilganj bridge in the town. At that time, several youths attacked him with sharp weapons, said police.

Hacked in the head, abdomen and legs, he was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital where he died, they said.

When asked about the reason behind the killing, Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge AKM Azmol Huda said, “Establishing supremacy.”

His family said there had been a long standing dispute between Rakib and those involved in collecting toll from vehicles for the bridge.

Filing of a case with the police station was underway last evening, said the OC.

Son of Zakir Hossain and Minzira Begum, Rakib attended master's examination, said his uncle Montu Miah.

Meanwhile, local people and the BCL activists of the college unit blocked Jessore-Narail road near the bridge, demanding arrest and trial of the killers.

Tyres were set afire on the road, halting traffic movement for two hours. Later, the blockade was withdrawn after the law enforcers assured them of meeting their demand.
