HC upholds death, life sentence of two

The High Court yesterday upheld the death penalty and life sentence of two accused for abducting and killing an eight-year-old boy in Tangail's Mirzapur upazila in March of 2003.

The death row convict, Mohammad Bakul, is now in jail while the lifer, Mohammad Selim, is on the run, Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Md Bashir Ullah told The Daily Star.

According to the prosecution, a group of miscreants led by Bakul and Selim kidnapped Mamun, a student of Afazuddin Darul Ulum Madrasa at Trimohon village in Tangail, on March 23, 2003. The convicts then killed the boy after failing to collect Tk 3.5 lakh ransom from his parents.   

On December 30, 2010, a Dhaka court sentenced Bakul to death and Selim to life term imprisonment for the killing.
