'Govt to build 130-storey icon city'

The government will build a 130-storey "icon and smart green city" on 60 acres of land in Purbachal new town project, said Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain yesterday.

"A US team has already visited the spot and sought 60 acres of land to make the icon city," he said while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of a three-day international exhibition of power, solar and real estate at Bashundhara International Convention Centre in the capital.

The minister said the government has undertaken three big projects - Uttara, Hatirjheel and Purbachal. The government is constructing 15,000 apartments in Uttara 3rd phase and 60,000 apartments in Purbachal, he said adding that the construction of apartments in Uttara 3rd phase will be completed on December 16, 2016.

About 60 percent of the development work of Purbachal project has already been done, he said and hoped that the project will be completed by December 2017.

He said the government will build a green city in Mirpur.

Entrepreneurs from 10 countries are taking part in the exhibition. Mosharraf said the government is exploring the possibilities to sign three more agreements with Malaysia.

"We will construct apartments for the people at very low costs. We are making arrangements so that all get apartments," he added.

Prime Minister's Adviser on Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Spanish Ambassador Edward De Leiglesia Del Rosal, FBCCI First Vice President M Shafiul Islam also spoke at the event.
