Four BCL men held over assaulting journos released

Four Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) activists, who were handed over to police for assaulting two journalists on Dhaka University campus on Tuesday night, were released yesterday as no formal complaint was lodged against them.

Ahmed Foysal of Persian language and culture department, Anwarul Kabir of communication disorder department, and Tofayel Hossain and Ashraful Islam Sakib of English department, are all residential students of Bijoy Ekattor Hall of the university.

Those four first-year students were released as they did not receive any written complaint from the victims, Shahbagh police said.

Masum Billah of bdnews24.com and a female journalist of Channel 24 were chatting in front of the arts faculty when Foysal, assistant secretary of the hall unit of BCL, along with the other three tried to haze them. As Masum requested them to stay away they assaulted them.

Masum caught one of them and informed the university's proctorial body, the victim told The Daily Star.

DU Proctor Prof AKM Golab Rabbani said the university authorities would take academic actions against the offenders.

BCL DU unit President Abid Al Hasan said they would take organisational actions against them.
