Formulate new guideline to appoint judges

SCBA demands

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) yesterday demanded the government and chief justice to immediately formulate a guideline to appoint new judges to the Appellate and High Court divisions and resolve the crisis of judges.

“If the guideline or a law is delayed to be formulated, we strongly demand that judges will have to be appointed as per the HC verdict on April 13, 2017,” said SCBA President Advocate Zainul Abedin.

He was speaking at a press conference organised by the SCBA in its auditorium yesterday afternoon.

The HC in its verdict regarding recruitment of apex courts judges observed, that the chief justice is the key person to recommend the appointment in the higher judiciary, and his opinion shall have primacy over that of the executive.

The existing system of appointment can be improved by the chief justice, the HC said in its verdict, also observing that chief justice is the best and prime person to evaluate the deserving candidate.

“We also want appointment of new judges to be made as per Article 95 (2) of the constitution,” said the SCBA president.

Competent, brilliant and qualified people will have to be appointed as judges of the SC, he also said.

SCBA Secretary Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, among others, spoke to the occasion.
