Five children drowned in separate incidents in Barisal and Rajshahi yesterday.

In Barisal, three children, including two sisters, drowned in a pond at Rajarchar village in Sadar upazila in the afternoon.

The dead are Hafiza, 7, and Hafsa, 5, daughters of Baten Fakir; and their neighbour Urmi, 7, daughter of Mofazel Mia.

The children were playing by a pond and suddenly the two siblings fell in the water. The other child also fell in the pond while trying to rescue them, said Siddiqur Rahman, member of Charmanoi Union Rajarchar ward 6.

The three were declared dead at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said Abdulla Al Mamun, a physician at the emergency unit of the hospital.

In Rajshahi, two children drowned in a pond at Tarapur village in Puthia yesterday, reports UNB.

Saidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Puthia Police Station, said Sami Islam, 6, son of Akbar Ali; and Noyon Ali, 6, son of Rony Hossain; drowned while bathing in a pond around 11:00am.

The children were declared dead at Puthia Upazila Health Complex after locals recovered their bodies from the pond.
