Dr Sadruddin Ahmed Chowdhury, the first vice chancellor of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) and an educationist, died from old age complications at a private hospital in Dhaka yesterday. He was 86.

Dr Sadruddin, a physicist and a researcher, was also a Language Movement veteran and an organiser of the Liberation War.

He was born on January 1, 1931 in Fulbari village of Golapganj upazila in Sylhet.

He was also the president of  Sylhet unit of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa).

In his teaching career spanning 58 years, he served at several universities, including Sust.
