A student of Dhaka University (DU) died yesterday after he fell off a mango tree on the campus.

The deceased was identified as Sheikh Toufiq Omar, a first-year student of Urdu department.

DU Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani said the student got injured after he fell off a mango tree on Tuesday night.

He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), but was later shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital. Doctors declared him dead around 2:00pm yesterday. “We have contacted his family members and the university authorities would provide compensation to his family in this regard,” he added. 

A friend of the deceased, who was present at the spot, said, “Toufiq climbed up the mango tree near the university central mosque to pluck mangoes; he suddenly slipped and fell off the tree.”

Hailing from Satkhira, Toufiq was also a resident student of Kabi Jashimuddin Hall of DU.
