'Death', life, death

The baby, who was declared stillborn at Dhaka Medical College Hospital but showed sign of life during burial on Monday, breathed her last early yesterday.

Dr Md Abdul Aziz, professor and director of Dhaka Shishu Hospital, said, “The premature baby girl was brought in a critical condition. She died at the intensive care unit at 1:33am.”

The doctors at DMCH declared the girl stillborn after she was born around 8:00am on Monday. Hours before, the physicians said there was no movement of the baby in the mother's womb and the baby was dead, according to Shariful Islam, an uncle of the baby.

The baby was then taken to Azimpur graveyard for burial around 9:00am. But it started moving after graveyard attendant poured water on her for final bath.

The baby was immediately taken to Azimpur Maternity Hospital and later shifted to the ICU at Shishu Hospital.

Briefing reporters at Shishu Hospital yesterday, Prof Aziz said the condition of the premature baby started deteriorating after 7:00pm on Monday. “We tried our level best with all the available facilities but could not save her life,” he said. The baby weighing less than one kg was brought to ICU at Shishu hospital around 12:30pm.

“It is urgent to give proper treatment with all facilities after the birth of such underweight baby; otherwise these infants develop different complications,” said a physician at the hospital preferring anonymity.

The Shishu Hospital authorities had a plan to form a seven-member medical board for the treatment of Meem, a name given to the baby for registration at the graveyard when she was brought there for burial on Monday.

“We would have been happy if we had saved the life of the girl,” Prof Aziz said.

The baby's father Minhaz Uddin received the body at around 12:45pm yesterday and took it to his village home Dhamrai, on the outskirt of the capital, for burial.

The mother of the baby, Sharmin Akter, is still undergoing treatment at ward 105 at DMCH.

Lying on a bed at DMCH, Sharmin told reporters on Monday that she got married three years ago and had conceived for the first time. She first got admitted to a clinic in Dhamrai two days before shifting to DMCH early Sunday.

“After a checkup, the doctors at the clinic told me that my baby was doing well. I even sensed its movement,” she said, adding she was moved to DMCH after developing a chest pain.

DMCH authorities formed a four-member team to investigate the incident.

Earlier in February 2015, another prematurely born baby, who showed sign of life during burial, breathed his last a day after doctors at DMCH declared him dead.
