Christians feeling insecure after attacks on priests

Will demonstrate today for arrest of perpetrators; hold mass gathering to convey concern

Shocked by the recent attacks on two priests and threats to some others, Christians will demonstrate today in the capital and submit a memorandum to the home minister tomorrow demanding immediate arrest of the criminals.

Luke Sarker was attacked in Pabna on October 5 and Piero Parolari was shot in Dinajpur on Wednesday. The two clerics narrowly escaped death.

Parolari is now under treatment at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka, while Luke fled his area on October 28 without informing anyone where he was headed to.

Besides, at least 12 priests had received death threats through text messages recently. They now fear attacks on their lives anytime.

Most of them have restricted their movement.

"We will form a human chain and demonstrate in front of the Jatiya Press Club in protest against the killing and threats," Nirmal Rozario, secretary general of Bangladesh Christian Association, told a mass gathering of the community people at Bottomley Home Girls' High School in the capital.

Nirmal and many from the several thousand-strong audience demanded security for clerics. Addressing the programme, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said the attackers of Parolari, who sacrificed 30 years of his life for the wellbeing of people, were beasts.  Regarding the threats, the minister told BBC Bangla Service that nobody informed him about the matter, but said they would provide security to the priests and people of the community.
