Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif today faced the heat of protesters who blockaded Shahbagh over the attack on Hindus in Brahmanbaria.

His convoy was held up by the protestors while passing through the area. He later expressed solidarity with the protestors, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

Protestors, wielding a banner of ‘General Students, Dhaka University’, blockaded Shahbagh – a key intersection of the capital – around 12:30pm and held their position for an hour.

Awami League leader Hanif was returning through the thoroughfare after finishing a programme at Dhaka University when the protestors refused to let him pass, the daily reports.

At one point, Hanif expressed solidarity with the protestors.

“Some students blocked my car,” Hanif told Prothom Alo. “They didn’t see I was inside. I came down from the car and expressed my solidarity with their protests.”

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna zone Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain Sardar told the daily that the students came in from Press Club and blockaded Shahbagh.
