Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid said legal actions will be taken if any private universities are found defying governments rules.

He said this while addressing the first convocation of Chittagong Independent University (CIU) as the chief guest yesterday.

There is no discrimination between government and private university students, and both are entitled to same opportunities, the minister said.

He urged the university authorities to keep the admission and tution fees within the range of people considering the socio-economic reality of the country.

“Universities must create new genre of knowledge and pursue research in their own to contribute to the nation's advancement...”

Professor Abdul Manna, UGC chairman was present as a special guest while former Education Minister and President Emeritus of IUB Dr Mazid Khan delivered speech as convocation speaker.

Touhid Samad, chairman of CIU board of trustees and Vice-Chancellor of CIU Dr Mahfuzul Haque Chowdhury were present among others. At least 180 students were conferred degrees in the convocation ceremony.
