2 college girls beaten up for protesting stalking

Two female college students were reportedly beaten up by a hotel owner for protesting stalking in Mirpur area of Dhaka today.

The victims, 16-year-old twins Fariha Habib and Ashowad Habib, are HSC first-year students of Mirpur BCIC College, Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shah Ali Police Station, told The Daily Star.

One Jibon Karim Babu, owner of a hotel located near the college gate hurled abusive words at them when they were waiting for a bus around 11:30am, the OC said.

As they protested the matter, Babu along with his two staff swooped on them with bamboo sticks, leaving them critically injured, he added.

Later, the victims were given treatment at Orthopedic Hospital.

Victims’ father Ahsan Habib said Fariha sustained injuries in her waist while her sister received injuries in her left leg.

A case was filed with Shah Ali Police Station in this connection.

Following the incident, the students of the college staged a demonstration on the college campus demanding arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers.

They also threatened for a tougher programme if their demands are not met immediately.
