A Gazipur court yesterday sentenced 13 people to death for killing a man in 1995.

The convicts are Falan, Sadir Ali, Kadir, Kalam, Bajit, Aziz, Osman, Abdus Samad, Humayun, Rustom, Faruk, Manik and Alam.

Six of them -- Kadir, Kalam, Bajit, Osman, Humayun and Rustom are still absconding.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each.

According to the prosecution, the convicts killed Billal Hossain Bilu, a worker of National Jute Mills, and also an accused in a case filed over the murder of former Jatiya Party MP Anwara Begum's husband, over a trifling matter in 1995.

A case was filed with Kaliganj Police Station by Bilu's brother Jalal Uddin on the same night. Police submitted a charge-sheet against in 1997 accusing the 13 persons.

After examining all the records and witness accounts, Gazipur Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan handed down the verdict.
