A man was killed in a mob beating for his alleged involvement in stealing money from a mosque donation box in Comilla's Nangalkot upazila early yesterday.

The dead is Mohammad Sohel, 28, of Dakkhin Kachi village in Monohorganj upazila, said Salahuddin Al Asad, officer-in-charge  (investigation) of Nangalkot Police Station.

Around 4:00am, Sohel was stealing money after breaking the donation box of Manikmora Bazar Mosque, the police official said.

The night guard of the mosque saw it and made an announcement through a loudspeaker. Locals then caught Sohel and beat him up mercilessly, killing him on the spot, the police official added. 

On information, police went to the spot and sent the body to Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Police detained the moazzin (who calls for Azaan) and the night guard of the mosque.
