A Joypurhat court yesterday sentenced a college teacher to life imprisonment for throwing acid on his niece in Kalai upazila of the district in 2013.

The court also fined him Tk 1 lakh, in default of which he would serve another two years in jail.

The convicted man, Saiful Islam Babu, 38, a lecturer of Piarapur IGM School and College in Gaibandha, is son of Shahjahan Ali of Kathail village under Kalai upazila.

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 of Dr Abdul Mojid delivered the verdict in presence of the accused yesterday.

According to the prosecution, the accused sprayed acid on the girl, 22, using a syringe while she was asleep in her house on the night of August 20, 2013.

Family members rushed her to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College in Bogra from where she was later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Parts of her face and back were burnt in the attack. The victim's father filed a case with Kalai police station the next day accusing Safiul.

She was a first year student of Kalai Degree College at the time of the attack.
