Awami League and Jamaat-Shibir men snatched a detained Jamaat leader from police in Sirajganj's Ullapara upazila yesterday afternoon.

Alauddin Al Azad, 40, of Koira Charpara in the upazila, is the acting secretary of Ullapara upazila unit Jamaat, police said.

Dewan Kaushik Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Ullapara Police Station, said acting on a tip-off, a police team raided Koira Charpara around 3:00pm to arrest Azad.

When police were taking him to the police station in handcuffs, a group of Jamaat-Shibir and AL men, led by local AL leader Saiful Islam Khoka, attacked police and snatched the Jamaat man, the police official said.

Saiful and Rashidul Islam, a local Chhatra League leader, both are cousins of Alauddin. The two, along with the Jamaat-Shibir men, took away Alauddin from police, the OC added.

Alauddin stands accused in 20 criminal cases, he said, adding that he had been absconding for a long time. 

“We are trying to nab the Jamaat leader as well as to detain the accused attackers,” the police official said.
