Fourty-three Covid-19 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of reported casualties due to the virus to 4,802, said the health directorate yesterday.

The death rate, in terms of all confirmed cases so far, stands at 1.41 percent.

With 1,724 people newly testing positive for the viral infection in 24 hours till 8:30am yesterday, the positivity rate stands at 12.27 percent against a total of 14,050 samples tested, according to yesterday's press release from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The detection rate is slightly over 2,002 persons per million of the population.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 3,41,056.

Bangladesh remains in 15th position in the total number of confirmed cases globally, one rung below the United Kingdom, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University's coronavirus resource centre.

In the same 24 hours, 2,439 patients recovered from their illness -- raising the total number of recoveries to 2,45,594 and the recovery rate to just over 72 percent.

Excluding the deceased and recovered patients, a total of 90,660 patients are currently undergoing treatment, mostly in homecare.

Of these active cases, only 3,121 were undergoing treatment in general beds and 298 in ICU beds in Covid-19 dedicated hospitals across the country.

Among the deceased as of yesterday, who all died in hospitals, 36 were male and seven were female.

Since the DGHS began reporting Covid-19 casualties on March 18, nearly 78 percent of all deceased are males.

One of the deceased was aged 31-40 years old, three within 41-50 years, seven between 51- 60 years, and 32 were over 60 years old.

Two of the deceased each were from Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions, three from Chattogram, four from Sylhet, five from Khulna, and 27 were from Dhaka division.

So far, Dhaka division saw the highest number of deaths -- with 48.71 percent of all deaths caused by the virus, followed by nearly 21 percent in Chattogram.
