The deceased, Zahid Hasan Tokon, 32, son of Ali Aslam of Krishnanagar village under the upazila, was joint convener of Jhikorgachha upazila Jubo League.

Victim's father has alleged that police picked up his son Tokon from their rented house at Chachra area in Jessore town at around 9.30 pm Friday.

Ali claimed that Tokon was killed in the night and police later left the body at Jessore General Hospital morgue.

Meanwhile police say, the deceased Zahid is a miscreant and an accused in 27 cases of murder, arms, robbery and narcotics.

Jhikorgachha Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Masud Karim said after his arrest Tokon confessed to possessing arms and bullets.

At around 3:00am police took him to Kaemkola Bagmara Beel to confront his accomplices.  Sensing police presence Tokon's accomplices fired at the law enforcers and police retaliated by firing seven rounds of bullets. The gang members all fled the scene and police recovered the injured Tokhon who had been shot in his head during the gunfire exchange.

Police took the critically injured Tokon to Jessore General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival, the OC said.

Police recovered one shooter gun, one bullet and five live bombs from the spot.

Shaon Reza, convener of Jubo League Jhikorgachha municipal committee said there are two convening committees of the Jubo League unit.

One is supported by Upazila Awami League general secretary Musa Mahmud while another the other supported by Upazila AL joint secretary Monirul Islam. The deceased Tokon was the joint convener of Monirul Islam backed committee.

The two groups have had enmity with one another for long, he said.
