'Cops took my husband from home the day before'

Says widow of Kamrul killed in 'crossfire' in Gazipur

Alleged drug dealer Kamrul Khan Kamu, 40, who was killed in a “shootout” with detectives in Gazipur on Friday, was picked up a day before from his home by plainclothes policemen, his wife has claimed.

“Five to six plainclothes policemen came to our house around 5:00am on Thursday and took Kamrul with them,” said Kamrul's wife Asma Begum.

“During the time, the policemen in name of searching the house took away some valuables, including a TV set, mobile phone, some cash, ornaments and documents,” she claimed.

Asma said she got married eight years ago and during these years, she never heard of any case filed against Kamrul. She said her husband used to work at a garment factory.

“I have requested police to hand Kamrul over to the court if he had committed any crime but I found his body a day after he was picked up from home,” she said.

Amir Hossain, inspector of Gazipur district police, told The Daily Star that their officials did not go to Kamrul's house at all.

“Kamrul is a noted drug trader and he was wanted in two cases filed with Tongi and Kaliganj police stations and another one filed with Joydevpur Police Station,” he said.

On Friday, police made contradictory statements about the identity of the deceased.

An official press release claimed that the dead was Kamrul Islam alias Kamal Khan alias Kamu, 40, son of late Siraj Uddin Khan alias Tomiz Uddin Khan of East Arichpur in Ershad Nagar of Tongi. He was accused in 14 cases including one relating to a double murder.

But Josna, wife of the aforementioned person, said her husband was not killed and he was in jail. Prashanta Kumar Banik, jail superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-2, also confirmed.
