Banker, college teacher found dead in a flat

A female college teacher and a male banker were found dead in a flat in the district town's Dakhshin Jhiltuli area late on Sunday night.

The dead are Sajia Begum, 34, an assistant professor of home economics at Govt Saroda Sundory Mohila College, and Md Faruk Hasan, 38, principal officer in the capital's Motijheel branch of Sonali Bank.

Locals said Sajia along with her younger son, aged about four, had been living in a rented flat on the ground floor of a two-storey building, owned by one Nur Islam, for about a year. Faruk rented another flat on the same floor a month ago.

Mahmudul Hasan David, son of the landlord, found the two dead in the bachelor banker's flat around 11:30am on Sunday.

“I was returning home after watching a concert at Government Rajendra College. As the door of Faruk's flat was open, I peeped through it and saw Sajia's body lying on the floor and Faruk hanging from the ceiling fan of the room,” said Mahmudul.

Police later recovered the bodies and sent those to Faridpur Medical College morgue for autopsies. They detained Sajia's husband Sheikh Shahidul Islam, a spare parts trader, for interrogation.

While renting the flat from the landlord, Faruk said he had been transferred to Faridpur and his parents would join him soon. The banker started living in the flat on Friday, said Mahmudul.

Family members said Shahidul's aunt had been living with his wife for some days and he along with his elder son, aged about 11, came to Faridpur on Thursday.

Talking to journalists at Kotwali Police Station, Shahidul yesterday said theirs was a love marriage. When he talked to his wife over phone around 4:00pm on Sunday, she informed him that she was at home.

“After returning home, I didn't find her. I called her again, but she did not pick up the call. I informed her colleagues about the matter and filed a general dairy with Kotwali Police Station at 10:00pm over her going missing.”

Faruk's elder brother Sohorab Hossain said he used to live with his brother in a rented flat in the capital. But he had no idea that Faruk had rented another flat in Faridpur.
