1 killed in clash over waz mahfil in Sylhet

A madrasa student was killed and around 50 people were injured during clash between two groups at a waz mahfil (religious programme) in Ambari of Jaintiapur upazila in Sylhet on Monday night.
Around 45 houses in Ambari, Jhingabari, and Kathalbari villages were also to rched, officials said.
Joynal Abedin, Jaintiapur upazila chairman quoting locals, said followers of Atrashi Pir organised the programme and a group, opposed to the idea of pirs, attacked the waz mahfil around 11:00pm Monday night.
Mujammil Hossain, 28, a final-year Dawra student of Haripur Madrasa was killed.
Some students of the madrasa later torched the houses in the area.
The clash went on until around 3:00am yesterday, said Bashir Uddin, upazila vice-chairman.
“Though the situation is under control now, another clash could erupt anytime,” he said.

Officials of the district visited the villages and allotted emergency support to the families in distress, Mourin Karim, upazila nirbahi officer of Jaintiapur told The Daily Star.
The police along with the administration took the situation under control that night, said Abul Hasnat Khan, additional superintendent of Sylhet police said.
A probe body, led by Shahidul Islam Chowdhury, additional deputy commissioner (general) of Sylhet, has been formed to investigate the incident. The probe body is to file the report within seven days, Shahidul said.
