Veteran makeup artist Narayan no more

Veteran makeup artist Narayan Chandra Basak of Mymensingh region is no more. He died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Saturday evening at the age of 90.

He left behind his wife, four sons, a daughter and a host of admirers and well-wishers to mourn his death.

In the course of his 70-year career, Narayan became a popular figure in the cultural arena of Mymensingh region, said Abul Monsur, president of Ensemble Theatre, a leading theatre troupe of Mymensingh.

Born in Mymensingh town, Narayan's skills as a makeup artist extended to some 1,000 plays.

Narayan had diverse talents. His friends and classmates remember him as an artist, make-up man, clay artist, actor and instrumentalist who had mastered the tabla and mouth organ.

Narayan entertained a large audience with mesmerising renditions of the tabla and mouth organ at a conference organised by Pakistan Art Council in Mymensingh town. Narayan was also an enlisted mouth organ artiste with Pakistan Radio.

Right up to his demise, Narayan was a relentless makeup artist and during his long career, he worked for many prominent film and drama artistes of the country including Anwar Hossain, Anwara Begum, Kabori, Saifuddin, Ashish Kumar Luha, Natun, Khan Joynul, Khalilur Rahman, Nina Hamid, Sajjad Hossain and M Hamid..

Narayan was also honoured by various organisations like Mymensingh Zila Shilpakala Academy, Mymensingh Sheba Niketan and Mymensingh Zila Parishad.
