A quiet birthday for Shahiduzzaman Selim

Popular actor-director Sahiduzzaman Selim's birthday is today, which he plans to observe in a solemn way. This year's celebrations, he says, are however on a low key because of his mother's recent demise.
Selim has many cherished birthdays memories of the past. He remembers that his mother was always the first to wish and bless him over the telephone. She also cooked his favourite dishes which his parents would take over to his Niketon house or he would go over to their place.
As for his childhood celebrations, he says, “Father gifted me with toys as birthday presents. Mother would cook up something special for me. As it was winter she usually made pitha with date juice which she continued to do until her demise.
“January 5 is a very special day for my family. Thanks to the media, my fans and well-wishers also flood me with birthday greetings.”
At home, daughter Toma and wife Rozi Siddiquie arrange special programmes to celebrate the day. “As a surprise, Toma and Rozi once invited some close friends and colleagues who arrived home out of the blue to wish me,” says the acclaimed actor who will soon be shooting and directing TV plays.
Birthday presents, especially books, are welcome, says Selim unabashedly.
