22 vehicles set on fire

Miscreants set fire to at least 22 vehicles including buses and private cars in Dhaka and elsewhere of the country today as the BNP-led alliance’s nonstop blockade continues for the fifth day.
Half of the arson incidents took place in Dhaka alone.
According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, nine vehicles were torched in Tejgaon, Banashree, Shahbagh, Motijheel, Kakrail, Rayerbagh, Mirpur, Singhboard, Baridhara and Dhamrai between 12:00 midnight and 9:00pm today.
Besides, a human haulier was set on fire at Baddah and a private car was torched at Gulshan, police and locals told The Daily Star.
The other arson incidents happened in Manikganj, Bogra, Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Joypurhat and Moulvibazar.
Miscreants set two buses on fire in Tejgaon and Shahbagh of Dhaka on the fifth day of the countrywide nonstop blockade enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance.
A passenger was injured in the Tejgaon incident.
Amulya Barman, 35, was rushed to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Amulya, who hailed from Panchagarh district and a rickshaw-puller by profession, suffered around 12 percent burn injuries, DMCH source said.
Miscreants poured petrol on a Gabtoli-bound bus before setting it on fire in front of Tejgaon Mohila College area around 7:00am, said Ataur Rahman, an in-charge of Fire service control room.
Later, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the blaze, he said.
At Shahbagh, suspected blockaders set fire to a passenger bus near Shishu Park around 6:00pm.

No injury was reported from the incident.
The alliance enforced the blockade to protest the BNP chairperson's confinement in her Gulshan office since January 3 and to realised its demand for a fresh general election under a nonparty administration.
