Special zone in Sylhet soon to draw investment

Foreign Affairs Advisor Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has said work on extension of Sylhet Osmani international airport runway will be completed within a month and Hajj flights will take off from the airport this year. He was talking to newsmen at Sylhet Circuit House Thursday night. Work on setting up of a catering institute of international standard in Sylhet will begin in January next year to cope with the huge demand for skilled manpower in catering industry in UK and other European countries. "I discussed the matter with British High Commissioner Anwar Chowdhury.They are also in a positive mood", he said. Expatriates in UK will also be involved with the institute, he said. The government is going to set up a special economic zone in Sylhet soon to draw more investment from expatriates and preliminary work fort this has already been started, he said. The Board of Investment has been involved in it and work will begin in three months, Dr Iftekhar said. He said the caretaker government wants to ensure voting rights of non-resident Bangladeshis (NRB), who have a huge contribution to the country's economy. The Election Commission is working on the issue, he added. A cell will be opened at Sylhet Deputy Commissioner's office soon to look into the problems of NRBs, the advisor said.
