Alleged Restriction on Hasina
RU teachers term decision 'inhuman'

The Progressive Teachers Society (PTS) at Rajshahi University yesterday criticised government's steps barring Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina from visiting recent landslide victims in Chittagong and allegedly obstructing her from going to the USA to see her daughter.

Terming the government stance 'totally inhuman', the PTS in a statement said the steps amount to snatching rights of a citizen.

"We feel that she should be allowed to visit the landslide victims and her daughter on human ground," it said.

The statement said extortion cases have been filed against Hasina 'just to harass and undermine' her before people.

"We urge the government to allow her to stay by the side of her pregnant daughter considering citizen's and human rights," the statement said.

They demanded withdrawal of the alleged restriction on her going to the USA.

Ensuring citizens their rights is necessary for establishing democracy, it said.

Signatories to the statement include Prof Muhammad Nurullah, Prof Anando Kumar Shaha, Prof Moloy Kumar Bhowmik, Prof Mahbubur Rahman, Prof Mozaffar Hossain, Prof Fayekuzzman, Prof Shamsuddin Ilias, Prof Sheikh Muhammad Nurullah, Prof Abul Kashem, Prof Jalal Uddin and PTS convener Prof Abdus Sobhan.
