Another extortion case against Sylhet city BNP chief

Another extortion case has been filed against Sylhet city BNP chief Ariful Haque Chowdhury, also a ward commissioner of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC).

SCC contractor Dilar Ahmed of Shahjalal Upashahar area filed the case with Sylhet Kotwali police station on Wednesday.

After preliminary investigation, the case was recorded and sent to magistrate court on Thursday, police said yesterday.

In the case, Dilar alleged that Ariful called him to his (Arif's) Kumarpara house in the city on March 30 last year and asked him to pay Tk 15 lakh and threatened cancellation of work order for a road expansion project and to blacklist his firm for non-compliance.

"I was compelled to pay the amount in six cheques of Sonali Bank's SCC branch", Dilar said in his complaint.

Earlier, on February 16, Roads and Highways Department contractor Nuruzzaman filed a Tk two crore extortion case against Ariful Haque Chowdhury and some others including former finance minister Saifur Rahman's son Naser Rahman and Moulvibazar pourashava Chairman Foyzul Karim Moyun.
