Toulouse mayor breaks ankle

Toulouse mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc broke his ankle when thrown into their football club's bath in celebration of their qualification for the European Champions League.

Moudenc claimed afterwards he was surprised by the shallowness of the bath when thrown in and his left ankle is now in plaster. "I'll be in plaster for three weeks and then another three weeks of rehabilitation," Moudenc said.

Moments before Toulouse had beaten Bordeaux 3-1 on Saturday night to finish third in the French league, which earns them a qualifying round berth in the European Champions League next season.

Toulouse are better known for their rugby team, the only side to have won rugby's version of the European Cup three times.

"I had negotiated before hand to take off my coat to save my mobile phone and credit card. I hit by foot on the bottom of the bath," Moudenc said, adding he had not realised how shallow it was. Just before, club president Olivier Sadran had also been thrown in.

Moudenc said he would be using crutches on Sunday afternoon as he joined club players and officials to continue celebrations.
