Ctg mayor sued for using CCC funds to set up TV channel

Chittagong city Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and three others were sued yesterday for causing Tk 1.47 crore loss to the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) in their illegal bid to set up a TV channel.

Deputy Director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Chittagong Arif Siddiqi filed the case with Kotwali Police Station. The CCC mayor is already in jail.

Other accused in the case are CCC Chief Engineer Muktarul Alam, CCC Superintendent Engineer Md Shahiddullah and Director of Group Theatre Institute of Chittagong Ahmed Iqbal Hyder.

Of them, Mukhtar was also sued in another graft case filed by the ACC with the same police station on May 24.

In his complaint, the ACC official alleged that the mayor in connivance with other three opened private satellite TV channel "Bijoy TV" without taking any permission from the government.

The channel went on air on December 16, 2006 but on March 15, this year the government ordered it to stop transmission along with six other channels.

The accused misappropriated nearly taka one and half crore from the CCC fund in the name of broadcasting the TV channel, the complainant mentioned.
