Programme to felicitate Atiqul Haque Chowdhury


Singing popular Tagore song Aguner poroshmoni chhoao praney, many cultural activists and cultural organisations greeted renowned TV playwright-director Atiqul Haque Chowdhury on his 75th birthday. Among the organisations were Sammilito Sangskritik Jote, Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, Udichi, Wrishiz Shilpi Goshthi, Natyashova and Kranti. The venue was Sufia Kamal Auditorium, National Museum.

Born in 1931, Atiq began his career as a drama producer in radio in the early 1960s. He joined the then Pakistan Television Corporation as a producer in 1965. In the 50 years of his kaleidoscopic journey Atiq has written and directed over 300 TV plays. He retired from BTV as the deputy director general (programme) in 1991 and later worked for 10 years as a guest teacher at the Department of Drama and Dramatics of Jahangirnagar University. For his contribution to TV plays Atiq bagged the Best TV Producer Award in 1976. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has twice honoured him with the Sequence of Merit Award. He has also received an honorary doctorate degree from the New Delhi-based World Development Council in 1990 for his contribution to TV plays.

Presided over by Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury; Mostafa Monwar, Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Khalil, Ramendu Majumdar, Kabori Sarwar, Mamunur Rashid, Nasiruddin Yousuff, M Hamid and Tarique Anam Khan were the main discussants at the programme.

The participants at the programme focused on Atiq's contribution to the cultural world and evaluated his plays. Dubbing him as a 'maker of TV stars', the discussants said that his plays are not mere entertainment, they also convey social messages. A moved Atiq said, "I would like to contribute more as a conscious member of the society."

Prominent singers and recitors like Fahim Hossain Chowdhury, Mehreen and others performed in the programme. The event was arranged by Kranti.
