An evening of sitar

With a sound that evokes the mystery and depth of the oceans, the sitar is easily one of most exotic musical instruments. This instrument was centre stage on June 3 at a classical instrumental music programme and a discussion held at the German Cultural Centre, Dhaka. The occasion was the 10th death anniversary of Ustad Abed Hossain Khan. As part of their yearly programme, the classical evening was organised by Ustad Ayet Ali Khan Sangeet Niketon (UAAKSN). Born on April 1929 in Brahmanbaria, Abed Hossain Khan was a renowned sitar player and music composer. He was also a professor at the Music College. In the course of his three-decade musical career, he performed at several events held in the country and overseas. He won the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 1985. He was the founder president of UAAKSN. Mobarak Hossain Khan, president of UAAKSN presided over the programme. He said, "Well rendered classical music harmonises feelings, brings joy and happiness, and opens the heart and the mind. In my view it is a rare treat for the music lovers of the city dwellers." He also recalled the contribution of Ustad Abed Hossain Khan to the development of classical music." After the discussion, the curtains went up with instrumental recitals in sarod, sitar and violin by 10 artistes of the organisation. Reenat Fauzia, the grand daughter of Ayat Ali Khan rendered a solo sitar piece, which was well-received by the audience. Two tabla players impressed the audience with their clarity and speed on the tabla.
