Shaheed Asad Day observed

Shaheed Asad Day was observed yesterday in the country commemorating the supreme sacrifice of the student leader and the days of mass uprising of 1969 that led the nation towards independence.

On this day, Asaduzzaman, a student of Dhaka University, was killed as police opened fire on a procession brought out for the realisation of 11-point demand of the Students Action Committee.

Different organisations took elaborate programmes to observe the day.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri, Workers' Party and Bangladesh Chhatra Union placed wreaths on the memorial plaque of Shaheed Asad in front of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Chhatra Union also held a meeting there.

Speakers at the meeting lamented that though we won independence in 1971, the dream of non-exploitative, non-communal and democratic Bangladesh for which Asad laid down his life is still unfulfilled.

Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal yesterday held a meeting at its Topkhana office where speakers called upon all to beef up movement against the ruling BNP- Jamaat alliance to free the country from the evil grasp of the alliance.
