Shyamol Chhaya going to the Oscars

Humayun Ahmed's movie Shyamol Chhaya has been nominated to compete in 'Best Foreign Language Film' category in the 78th Oscar, 2006. On September 13, in a press conference at Hotel Sheraton, Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies (BFFS), announced the nomination. Earlier in the 2003 Oscars, Tareque Masud's movie Matir Moina was a contestant in the same criteria. Golam Rabbani Biplab, the vice president of the organisation said, "The Motion Film Picture, the organiser of the Oscars, calls for the nomination from different countries of the world. BFFS selects the Bangladeshi film to compete in the Oscars." In his speech the chairman of the selection committee, Azad Rahman, who is also the chairman of BFFS, said, "Primarily we selected three movies: Humayun Ahmed's Shyamol Chhaya, Tauqir Ahmed's Joy Jatra and Murshedul Islam's Duratta. Tauqir Ahmed has not submitted the print of his movie. Finally, we have nominated Ahmed's movie for the Oscar 2006." Asked for his reaction, the elated screen playwright and director of the movie Humayun Ahmed said, "I am really glad that my fifth movie will participate in the prestigious Oscars. I thank BFFS for taking this commendable responsibility, which I believe, will encourage the filmmakers to make better films in the coming days." Released last November, Shyamol Chhaya won the appreciation of viewers. The story of the feature film revolves around the sufferings of the war-ravaged people of Bangladesh in 1971. Pitambar, his blind father and grandmother, Karim with his daughter-in-law Ratri, Fuli with her mother, Mowlana Munshi Muslem and his wife Begum, Gourango with his mother and wife are the passengers on board. The boatmen are taking them to safety, far away from the fierce clutches of war. All the people on board are devastated by the horrors of war. As the story advances, different events unravel. The 110-minute duration film Shyamol Chhaya is produced by Impress Tele Films. The cast of the film includes Humayun Fareedi, Shimul, Shaon, Riaz, Swadhin, Syed Akhtar Ali, Tania Ahmed, Ahmed Rubel, Ejazul Islam, Faruque Ahmed, Shamima Nazneen, Jesmine Parvez and others.
