Tax on SIM card to destabilise cellphone market

The imposition of Tk 1,200 tax on each SIM (subscribers identification module) card is likely to destabilise the mobile phone market, said Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, at a post-budget briefing yesterday.

Criticising the proposed tax, Debapriya said it may give undue advantage to particular mobile telephone companies as technologies offered by them do not require SIM cards. He also criticised the flat rate of tax for all mobile handsets irrespective of price and quality.
