Six thousands workers of collapsed Spectrum Sweater Industries Ltd factory building in Savar have not been paid salaries for March and April and overtime for three months even 25 days after the April 11 tragedy, workers said yesterday during observance of a token hunger strike at Muktangan in the capital.Jatiya Garment Sramik Federation and the Bangladesh Garments and Industries Workers' Federation jointly organised the programme from 11:00am to 12:00 noon demanding proper compensation for the dead and injured workers and payment of pending salaries and overtime to all. Families of the victims of the tragedy suffer ignominy as they cannot pay their house rent or the grocers, garment workers said Holding the factory owners' indifference responsible for the tragedy, speakers questioned why the owners were not arrested even after 25 days although Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters' Association (BGMEA) leaders admitted that they have communication with the owners. Workers also demanded forming a monitoring committee comprising representatives of the government, BGMEA and trade unions to ensure safe workplace for garment workers. Amirul Huq Amin, general secretary of Jatiya Garment Sramik Federation, presided over the programme where Babul Aktar, Sahida Sarkar, Majibur Rahman, Nurun Nahar, Nasrin Aktar and Kamrun Nahar addressed.
