2nd International Film Festival Bangladesh
Lifetime Achievement Award conferred on six film personalities


On the occasion of the ongoing film festival, the Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies (BFFS) conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award on six cinema personalities for their remarkable contribution to the country's film industry. The Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation Sadek Hossain Khoka handed over the awards at a ceremony on December 05 at the Poet Sufia Kamal Auditorium of the Public Library. Chairman of the Festival Committee MM Rezaul Karim and President of BFFS Habibur Rahman Khan were present at the event.

The award was given for the second time. This year's awardees are Iftekharul Alam, Baby Islam, Anowar Hossain, Subhash Dutta, Subal Das and Sultana Zaman.

Chiefly known as a distributor and motion picture exhibitor, Iftekharul Alam is also a renowned producer of many films. His involvement with cinema started with screening films at a small theatre hall from his Star Films Distributor in 1948. He was the General Secretary of the erstwhile East Pakistan Film Samity in 1951. Among the films he has produced are Kancher Deyal, Shangam, Bahana, Dhirey Bohey Meghna and Ora Egaro Jon.

Cinematographer Baby Islam started his career as an assistant of Ajay Kar, a renowned director of the pre-Partition Kolkata. During 1952-1954 he also worked in a few Bombay films. In 1956 he came to Dhaka. He filmed movies including Titas Ekti Nodir Naam, Neel Akasher Nichey and Phir Milenge Hum Dono. He also directed Choritrohin.

Actor Anowar Hossain, who earned fame especially for his role of Nawab Sirajuddoula, started his acting career in the film Tomar Amar. Later he emerged in the lead role in Surjo Snan. His other films include Jibon Theke Neya, Orunodoyer Ognishakkhi, Lathial, Golapi Ekhon Trainey, Debdas, Baro Bhalo Lok Chhilo and Bhaat De.

Subhash Dutta, a versatile cinema personality, has donned the hat of actor, director, producer, scriptwriter and art director. He designed the poster of the first Bangla film Mukh O Mukhosh. His films like Abirbhab, Talash, Chanda, Shutorang, Rajdhanir Bukey, Edesh Tomara Amar have earned huge appreciation both at home and abroad.

Musician Subal Das has directed music in many popular films like Akash Ar Mati, Kajol, Indhon, Harano Manik, Onuraag, Rajmahal, Modhumoti and Shishnaag.

Actress Sultana Zaman is one of those pioneering women who participated in the film movement at a time when the film industry was in its embryonic stage. Her first film was Matir Pahar. Her other films include Chanda, Notun Diganto, Anek Diner Chena, Janajani, Shutorang, Ujala, Mala etc. Sultana Zaman now lives abroad and was unable to receive her award.
