Steps taken to make garment workers self-employed

Minister for Women and Children Affairs Begum Khurshid Jahan Haque yesterday said the government has taken various steps to provide women garment workers with necessary training to make them self-employed. Speaking at Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium on the 'Situation of Women in Bangladesh', she said they will also be given language and other skill training for safe migration. Khurshid Jahan said Tk 20 crore has been allocated for women garment workers who are likely to be unemployed with the termination of the MFA by the end of this year. The minister also highlighted various success of the government in women and children sector. She said sometimes the non- government organisations present false statistics which are likely to mislead the people. Khurshid Jahan said the rate of repression on women and children has decreased significantly as various laws have been enacted by the government. She said a total of 95 people were awarded death penalty while another 147 sentenced to life imprisonment for various crimes against women and children from August 2003 to August 2004. Ferdous Ara Begum, joint secretary of the ministry, said child trafficking declined by 18 percent in 25 bordering upazilas during the period. Women and Children Affairs Secretary Mortuza Hussain Munshi, DRU President Alamgir Hossain and General Secretary Saleh Shibli were present on the occasion.
