3 killed as twister hits Mymensingh

A tornado lashed three upazilas of Mymensingh Sunday evening killing at least three people and injuring 50 others.Sufferings of at least 3,000 families rendered homeless in Wednesday's twin tornadoes in Mymensingh and Netrakona meanwhile are mounting due to inadequate relief, lack of rehabilitation measures and torrential rains yesterday and the day before. The three killed Sunday evening are Ayenun Nesa, 50, Mamtaz Begum, 26, and a three-year-old child, They died on the spot, Mymensnigh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) sources said. Another victim of the twin tornadoes, Arosh Ali, 45, died yesterday at the MMCH, raising the death toll to 72 in the two districts. A total of 280 people injured in the tornadoes are now under treatment at the MMCH and 278 at Netrokona General Hospital. They sustained multiple cut injuries and fractures. Our Mymensingh correspondent reported that the tornado lashed six unions of Phulbaria, Trishal and Bhaluka upazilas Sunday evening. Upazila adminstration sources said the tornado hit Kaladah, Naogaon, Asim, Harirampur, Dhanikhola and Uthora uinons at 7:00 pm. Twelve out of 50 injured were admitted to the MMCH and the rest to different health centres. The storm damaged more than 500 houses and uprooted hundreds of trees. The victims of Wednesday's twin tornadoes need their houses to be rebuilt on a priority basis as they are living under the open sky, our correspondents said. "Crisis of food troubles us much but we are suffering more due to lack of shelter," said a victim. Many others echoed him. Our Mymensingh correspondent said not any of the houses damaged in Wednesday's tornado in Kaliani Kasda, Boalmara, Samulia Para and Gazir Bhita was rebuilt till yesterday. However, army personnel have set up some 50 tents in the affected Samulia Para and Gazir Bhita for the shelterless. They have also repaired 18 tubewells and installed three to ease drinking water crisis. The relief ministry yesterday decided to allocate Tk 2 crore and 1250 bundles of corrugated tin as house building assistance for the tornado victims of Mymensingh and Netrakona. It also decided to provide Tk 12,50,000 in cash assistance, 500 tonnes of rice, 800 pieces of lungi and an equal number sari and 1000 tins of biscuit. Meanwhile, taking advantage of the heavy rush of people to the tornado-hit villages in Halughat upazila, tempo drivers and rickshawpullers have greatly increased fare.
