Sangsad body sympathises with police

A parliamentary sub-committee yesterday sympathised with the police force as the agency itself is limping with lack of logistics and its members make a living on pitiable salary. The sub-committee on the home ministry came up with nothing but solace when the ministry narrated the sorry story of the police department. "Despite a lot of crises in the police force, they are trying to do better. If we could provide them with logistics, proper training and standard salary, their performance was bound to improve," Mushfiqur Rahman, convenor of the sub-committee, told the Daily Star emerging from the meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. "Everybody criticises the police for their poor performance, but we should also think about their limitations," he added. On police's corruption, the sub-committee convenor said, "Bribery has become a common phenomenon in almost every profession. Why blame only police for it?" The body is preparing a set of recommendations to improve the police performance. The sub-committee also discussed the reform proposal of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The UNDP has already submitted a $13.5 million three-year police reform proposal that also includes change in the recruitment method and modern training. The reform programme is likely to start next January, said Home Secretary Omar Farooq.
