Blast files writ against jail without trial
Staff Correspondent
Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (Blast), a leading non-governmental legal aid provider, filed a writ petition with the High Court yesterday against adjournment and procrastination of innumerable cases for years. Mentioning 155 such cases, Blast asked for an end to dawdle in the judiciary. As per the criminal procedure code (CrPC), a case pending with the judge's court is likely to be disposed of in 360 days, but the courts are not following the CrPC provisions, Blast said, adding that innumerable cases have been pending for years. Quoting a report run by The Daily Star on December 23, Blast lawyers said Jahangir of Dholaipar in Demra is languishing in jail since his arrest in 1992, as the case filed against him is yet to be disposed of. The High Court vacation bench of Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain issued an ad interim order to scrutinise such cases and submit a report. The court fixed January 4 for further hearing. Dr Kamal Hossain moved the petition for Blast.
