Christmas today

The Christians in Bangladesh, as elsewhere in the world, celebrate the holy Christmas today.

The programmes of the day, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, include special prayers at churches, decoration of Christmas tress, distribution of gifts by Santa Claus to the children, family reunion and feast.

Tight security measures have been taken in the city and at divisional and district headquarters to ensure peaceful celebrations of the day.

The day is a public holiday.

President Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages, greeting the country's Christian community.

Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private TV channels will broadcast special programmes and national dailies publish supplement, highlighting the significance of the day.
