14 fasting students fall sick at JU

Fourteen students, including three women, among about 100 general students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on a fast-unto-death for immediate resumption of classes fell sick yesterday after over 30 hours of hunger on an agitation-packed campus.

Protest processions rocked the campus, university authorities were confined to the administrative building, students snapped utility services to the vice-chancellor's house and a pro-government student front confined leaders of the teachers' association in an eventful day on the restive campus.

The students began staging the hunger strike in front of the administrative building at 10:00am on Tuesday demanding an end to the academic stalemate since October 15. The students were fasting until 7:00pm yesterday.

"I refused treatment by a university doctor. We will fast until death to press the authorities to resume classes," said Rubel, an English student.

Campus sources said there was no sign of breaking the deadlock on the campus where pro-vice-chancellors Prof Imamuddin and Prof Enamul Huq Khan, Treasurer A B M Enayet Hossain and Proctor Dr Moshiur Rahman Khan were confined to the administrative building. The Agrani Bank, examination office and transport office remained lock since Tuesday.

The pro-government Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists confined about 35 teachers of JU Teachers Association (Juta) including its President Prof Amin Mohammad Ali to the Social Science Faculty building yesterday, demanding immediate reopening of classes.

The Juta members were confined when they were holding an executive committee meeting to decide on their next course of action in view of the strike.

About 2,000 students brought out processions yesterday like in the previous day after a night in the open when they lampooned the authorities singing parodies.

The students cut off power, gas and telephone lines to the VC's residence in the afternoon.
